January 2021 Social Media Content Review

⁣⁣
⁣⁣Flushing with the seat up.⁣⁣

Let's leave that in 2020, okay? ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Let's also leave believing that other folks' bodies are our business.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
That women owe anybody a damn thing, that black folks should provide data, proof, and facts to verify our lived experiences, and that our children should bear any responsibility for us.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Let's leave our obsession with punishment that leads us to believe that prisons are civilized and necessary.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Let's abandon our belief that poor people have earned their socio-economic status and, as a result, don't deserve nice things.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Let's divest from an economic system that is INHERENTLY exploitive. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And divorce from the mindset that's got us hoodwinked into believing we have more in common with billionaires than folks living below the poverty line.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And can we please leave "Lesser of two evils" elections in 2020?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It's all shitty.

When we look at the #Voguemagazine cover featuring Vice President-Elect #KamalaHarris in a pair of chucks, we observe what is commonly known as a 'microaggression.'⁣⁣
⁣⁣
mi·cro·ag·gres·sion⁣⁣
\mī-krō-ə-ˈgre-shən⁣⁣
⁣⁣
noun⁣⁣
⁣⁣
a comment or action that subtly and often unconsciously or unintentionally expresses a prejudiced attitude toward a member of a marginalized group (such as a racial minority)⁣⁣
⁣⁣
indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Harvard University psychiatrist Chester M. Pierce coined the term in 1970. It is also often referred to as 'racial microaggression.' However, anyone from a marginalized group can be on the receiving end of microaggressions.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The Vice President Elect's Vogue cover was SUPPOSED to feature her in a beautiful powder blue suit with a United States flag lapel pin.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
For reasons unknown, Vogue changed the agreed upon plan, decided to go with the cover that we've all seen by now, and didn't communicate to Vice President Harris beforehand.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Whether we personally like the photos or not or whether or not we are bothered by Vice President-Elect Harris' appearance in sneakers or not isn't the issue.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This woman should have been informed.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Regarding microaggressions, @ebonyjanice has asserted on many occasions that there truly is no such thing. Either it's an aggression, or it ain't.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So, even as we identify and call out acts of oppression and marginalization, we need to beware of the language of minimization.⁣⁣
Let’s call a thing a thing.⁣
⁣⁣
Iyanla Vanzant has a tweet that says: When you call a thing a thing, it is not necessary 4 others 2 agree with what you call it. Some can't see it. Others see it and lie.
